Galle Dutch Fortress
When the Portuguese first build this fortress in 1588 at the bay of Galle on the southwestern coast of Sri Lanka it was only a temporary fort, after 83 years of their first land in 1505. But in 1640 the fortress captured by the Dutch nationals and they reconstructed it with further expansions and reinforcements and converted it to their administrative center, secured with moats, trusses and sentry points. The fort of Galle was handed over to the English by Dutch on 1796, one week after the surrender of Colombo.
Inside the walls it covers an area of 52 hectares. This fortress is completed with 14 bastions which is still the best-preserved and the best example for European architectural styles and South Asian traditions. In 1988 it become an UNESCO world heritage. Even though the hottest month in Galle is May the average temperature
is 28°C (83°F). The wettest month is November with an average of 207.4mm of precipitation.
